A Look into Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology with Dr. Gylynthia Trotman
In the recent episode of the “Healthful Woman” podcast, “Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology: The Few and the Proud,” host Dr. Nathan Fox and guest Dr. Gylynthia Trotman delved into Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (PAG). The episode offers an in-depth view of Dr. Trotman’s career path, motivations, and methods of treating younger patients.
What is Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology?
Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology is distinct from general gynecology, focusing on patients under 25. Common issues Dr. Trotman addresses include menstrual problems, pelvic pain, and vulvovaginal disorders such as persistent itching or burning. The role often involves more than just medical treatment; it encompasses a holistic approach to reproductive health counseling, especially for teenagers. Dr. Trotman emphasizes that much of her role before puberty involves counseling and educating patients and their parents.
Dr. Trotman’s Draw to Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology
Dr. Trotman found her calling in the adolescent population. She realized she could relate to young women and provide them with the guidance and support they needed during their critical developmental years. This realization led her to specialize in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, and she became one of the only four fellows in this subspecialty during her training.
Challenges and Rewards of PAG
Dr. Trotman describes her past motivations: “I spent most of my summers in the Caribbean growing up, and I read the newspapers, and there was a lot of devastation surrounding women and childbirth or women’s health in general in the Caribbean.” This motivation led Dr. Trotman to pursue her career.
The complexity of gynecological issues in younger patients often requires coordination with other specialists. Dr. Trotman highlights the importance of communication, particularly confidential discussions with patients about their bodies, which help build trust and empower young women.
Building Relationships and Trust
Dr. Trotman believes in creating a welcoming and non-intimidating environment for her young patients. She prioritizes understanding what matters to her patients and ensures that they are comfortable before proceeding with any examination. Confidential consultations with patients aged 12 and older are a staple in her practice to establish trust. Dr. Trotman’s dedication to Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology highlights the necessity of specialized care for young women and the profound impact that compassionate and informed medical practice can have on the lives of adolescents.
