When it comes to women’s health, having access to accurate diagnostic tools is crucial for effective treatment. The hysteroscopy has revolutionized how OB/GYNs diagnose and treat various uterine conditions. In a recent episode of the “Healthful Woman” podcast, host Dr. Nathan Fox and guest Dr. Lis Shlansky explained the significance of hysteroscopy and its role in modern gynecology. Learn more about hysteroscopy, why it’s performed, and if you might benefit from it.

What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows OB/GYNs to examine the inside of the uterus using a tiny camera called a hysteroscope. This procedure allows your doctor to examine the uterine lining, cervix, and the openings of the fallopian tubes to diagnose and treat various conditions affecting women’s reproductive health.

Dr. Shlansky explains, “It’s a way of visually inspecting the inside of the lining of the uterus. But not only can you inspect the inside of the uterus, but you can also take a look at the cervix. So, the cervix is the gateway between the vagina and the uterus, and that’s what opens in childbirth, but it allows you to look all the way from what you can’t see in a regular exam room to the inside of the cervix to the inside of the uterus. You can also see the opening to the tubes as well so you can see where sperm actually go. And obviously, you can’t look out the tubes, but you can get a good idea of something’s normal or abnormal.”

Hysteroscopy is useful because it offers a direct visual inspection, reducing the need for more invasive surgeries like a hysterectomy.

Why is Hysteroscopy Performed?

Hysteroscopy is often used to diagnose and treat issues such as abnormal uterine bleeding, fibroids, polyps, and infertility. It is considered the gold standard for evaluating uterine conditions because it allows for precise, targeted biopsies and even the removal of growths during the same procedure. By providing a clear view of the uterine cavity, hysteroscopy ensures that doctors can accurately diagnose and treat conditions with minimal discomfort and risk to the patient.

Who Should Consider Hysteroscopy?

This procedure is recommended for women who experience symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, infertility, or have had unusual ultrasound findings. Hysteroscopy is also beneficial for identifying small polyps or fibroids that may not be visible on an ultrasound, allowing for a more accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan.
